Back In Stock was launched in 2011 by Matt Stubbs. He developed the app after realizing that Shopify store owners are often not prepared when their products go out of stock. eCommerce businesses are always chasing more traffic and conversions. They start campaigns on social media, pay for ads, try getting featured on blogs, etc. But when that works and they suddenly get a surge of customers, their popular products run out of stock. And yes, that’s how they lose revenue.
Store owners can recover some of that lost revenue with Back In Stock. It prompts customers to sign up for a notification when the product they want is available. It sends an alert through email or SMS when store owners restock the product. When customers click on the alert, it leads them to complete their purchase on the online store.
The app helps customers get the exact product they wanted. It notifies customers when the specific variant they were looking for is available. For example, the size or color of the product they selected. This feature makes it more likely that customers will be interested in the product again.
Customers can choose to be notified by either email or SMS. The app displays CTAs on all product pages, such as an “email me when available” button. After the customers click on it, they see a pop-up form. They can then fill in their email address or phone number and choose variants from the drop-down menu.
Store owners can customize the CTA by adding their own button. They can also use the app’s Javascript API to build a custom button. For editing email templates, they can use Liquid which is popular among Shopify store owners.
Back In Stock can be used in more ways than just notifying customers when the product they searched for is available. Store owners can use it for flash sales, coming soon collections, and pre-orders. That’s how businesses can have an ongoing relationship with their customers. It also helps them understand the demand for specific products through analytics and reports.
The app has a free plan which supports five email campaigns. Other than that, there are three paid plans at $19/mo, $39/mo, and $59/mo. The paid plans support both email and SMS and start from 100 campaigns. They also allow integration with MailChimp, Klaviyo, and more. As of now, any user who hasn’t used this app earlier can grab a free 14-day trial.
